Peaks and valleys: How the 2026 NFL season is one of redemption for Puka Nacua

Through his first eight games, he caught seven passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a broken foot that ended his freshman campaign. He played his best football in his final collegiate season, catching 48 passes for 625 yards. Less than six months later, he was shining on the field against the Seahawks, pacing the Rams to victory.[/p][p]His first professional career performance wasn’t a coincidence. He added 10 touchdowns and earned Pro Bowl honors, as well as a spot on the First-Team All-Pro team.[/p][p]In the Wild Card Round against the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/carolina-panthers/IoAX6qmR/"]Carolina Panthers[/a], the Nacua caught 10 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing. Despite multiple teammates telling him to stop, Nacua continued streaming until two other players approached him and forced him to end the stream.[/p][p]Nacua didn't listen at first, instead moving to the other side of the locker room. The livestream ended shortly afterward. [/p][p]Just about a week later, he drew further scrutiny after making an antisemitic gesture during an internet livestream with internet personality Adin Ross. The gesture was described by Ross as “Jew Hands” — rubbing hands together in a way that depicts Jewish people as greedy. Nacua agreed to use the gesture as his next touchdown celebration.[/p][p]During the livestream, Nacua also complained about and criticized NFL officials.[/p][p]After facing criticism, Nacua issued a public apology, stating that [b]“at the time he had no idea” [/b]of the nature of the gesture. [/p][p][b]"I deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions, as I do not stand for any form of racism, bigotry, or hate of another group of people,"[/b] Nacua wrote in his statement. [/p][embed guid="4b72cb6d-6447-4640-a26b-62479d28353e" url="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2001731840441196858?lang=en" social-type="twitter" /][p]The NFL distanced itself from Nacua’s actions.[/p][p][b]“The NFL strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and derogatory behavior directed towards any group or individual,"[/b] the league said in a statement. [b]"The continuing rise of antisemitism must be addressed across the world, and the NFL will continue to stand with our partners in this fight. Hatred has no place in our sport or society.” [/b][/p][p]The Rams issued a statement as well, saying that [b]“there is no place in this world for Antisemitism as well as other forms of prejudice or hostility towards the Jewish people and people of any religion, ethnicity, or race.” [/b][/p][p]For a few months, Nacua only made the headlines for his football features...until March. A woman named Madison Atiabi filed a civil lawsuit against Nacua, accusing him of making an unprovoked antisemitic statement before biting her on her shoulder.[/p][p]Allegedly, this happened on New Year’s Eve. She said Nacua went on an antisemitic rant before biting her. The 24-year-old wide receiver denied all allegations, and his attorney, Levi McCathern, said that [b]“the bite was a consensual or minor ‘horseplay’ that only left a temporary mark” [/b]while calling the lawsuit an attempted shakedown. [/p][embed guid="c89ce610-eef0-4966-862a-57302f2849fb" url="https://x.com/TMZ_Sports/status/2036949266456039852?lang=en" social-type="twitter" /][p]On April 1, 2026, surprising news broke through - Nacua had checked himself into a rehabilitation center in Los Angeles.[/p][p]Suddenly, it was clear that Nacua was fighting demons the public had no idea about. For about a month, Nacua was silent. But he returned to the team on April 20th, fully participating. Before the Rams squared off with the 49ers in Australia in the season opener, Nacua opened up about his struggles. [/p][p][b]“I was never one to share my fears, my worries,"[/b] Nacua told Netflix’s Elle Duncan. [b]"I was always finding different ways to escape from that tension, that stress. I think one, alcohol was definitely a thing for me. But Nacua and his now ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, Hallie Aiono, broke up in early 2025 after dating for about 3.5 years. [/p][p][b]“Just, I think, some of the change in lifestyle that came to me, becoming a public figure, the stress of performing at a high level,” [/b]Nacua said.[b] “And then I recently became a father. My son is 10 months old, and navigating that co-parenting relationship with his mother, I would kind of isolate myself to feel, like, the weight of all the issues and things that I have was stuck on my shoulders and not being willing to ask for help. I was never one to share my fears, my worries. The last few weeks were specifically very, very hard. I was very depressed and emotionally very heavy. My doctor knew what I was going through, and that I was alone in this pregnancy, and at 38 weeks, he suggested that I got induced at 39 weeks,"[/b] said Aino. [/p][p]Shortly after announcing she was pregnant in June, Aino asked a judge to award her full custody of the child, with Nacua getting visitation rights and financial support from him. Nacua responded by requesting a paternity test to determine if the baby was even his.[/p][p]The two seemed to get along a bit better after the baby was born, sharing a picture snuggling Kingston in the hospital.
