The women's ice hockey bronze medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics have gone the way of Switzerland, after they scored in the 10th minute of overtime to beat Sweden 2-1.

[p]It's just a second Winter Olympic women's ice hockey medal for the Eisgenossinnen after bronze in 2014, while [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/sweden/bcZueL1Q/"]Sweden[/a]'s wait for a first medal since silver in 2006 goes on.[/p][p]The two sides came into this match after experiencing very different kinds of semi-final disappointment - Sweden were outclassed 5-0 by the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/usa/hhS4ztel/"]United States[/a], while the Swiss came up just short against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/canada/Aq5hyMur/"]Canada[/a], losing 2-1.[/p][p]A medal on the line made for a nervy opening period at PalaItalia, in which either side could consider themselves disappointed not to break the deadlock, as the Swedes led the shot count 8-5, but the Swiss did not make use of the only powerplay, after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kjellbin-anna/WtDCAtO4/"]Anna Kjellbin[/a] was called for cross-checking.[/p][p]Seven minutes into period two, there was no doubt who had missed the biggest chance, as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/johansson-thea/2w9zGG6T/"]Thea Johansson[/a] fouled [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/wey-maria-ivana/82ZIJHcH/"]Ivana Wey[/a] when the Swiss was through on goal, and the referees awarded [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/switzerland/zJQ7juAs/"]Switzerland[/a] a penalty shot. Wey stepped up, by Swedish goaltender [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/svensson-ebba/dt0MykGl/"]Ebba Svensson[/a] Traff stood firm and made the save.[/p][embed guid="806b4215-e9ea-4076-bebd-f0d00e3c27e2" url="https://x.com/Trekronorse/status/2024518516108304416" social-type="twitter" /][p]Following that let off, it looked like Sweden's day with 8:20 left in the second, when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/svensson-hilda/jmn5kcP9/"]Hilda Svensson[/a] carried the puck well in the Swiss zone before finding [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/jungaker-mira/8YPhPAOK/"]Mira Jungaker[/a] at the blue line, her shot flew through traffic and in off the pipes to give Sweden the lead.[/p][p]However, the advantage lasted all of four minutes exactly, as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/leemann-sinja/QPor8Z2o/"]Sinja Leemann[/a] stole the puck in the Swedish zone, poked it through to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/marti-alina/bP8gWBAF/"]Alina Marti[/a], and got in the right place in front of the net to beat Svensson Trapp when receiving Marti's pass from behind the net.[/p][embed guid="42fc3177-3e54-4dbb-81dc-8e1cf673c464" url="https://x.com/IIHFHockey/status/2024516945492546019" social-type="twitter" /][p]In the third period, the Damkronorna had more than double the shots on goal as their opponents, but they could not find a way past [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/brandli-andrea/UTdBOk71/"]Andrea Brandli[/a]. Neither side could capitalise on a powerplay apiece, as Kjellbin again and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lutz-lena/zy14PaL7/"]Lena Lutz[/a] both spent two minutes in the box, and so overtime was required.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/zimmermann-laura/06y8JP7F/"]Laura Zimmerman[/a] forced a huge save from the Swedish goaltender in the third minute - a rare chance as neither side wanted to give an inch in the 3-on-3 extra period. Despite dominating the shot count in regulation, Sweden seemed to be lacking attacking ideas as time wound down.[/p][p]Finally, in the final minute of the extra 10, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/muller-alina/zJwfmwNL/"]Alina Muller[/a] added an injection of pace down the centre, played a one-two with Wey on the left, and buried the shot past Svensson Traff to win [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/hockey/sweden-bcZueL1Q/switzerland-zJQ7juAs/?mid=t69TyyVI"]the match 2-1[/a] and bronze for Switzerland.[/p][p]At 19:10 CET, North American rivals United States and Canada will face-off for the Olympic title.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/hockey/world/olympic-games-women/"]Follow the women's gold medal match on Flashscore.[/a][/p]
