FIFA World Cup (WC) co-hosts USA reached the knockout stages for the fourth successive finals they have appeared in, this time with a game to spare after seeing off Group D rivals Australia in a confident 2-0 win in Seattle.

[p]Tony Popovic’s decision to play young goalkeeper [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/beach-patrick/d6MmYtl5/"]Patrick Beach[/a] over team captain [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ryan-mathew/YBLvziIh/"]Mathew Ryan[/a] in their opener paid dividends, with the 22-year-old making eight saves and keeping a clean sheet against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/turkey/QeijuHo5/"]Turkey[/a].[/p][image alt="Match stats" id="ebc03f00-86d8-41f7-8ef1-3945fac254fc" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="881644a0-dd19-4119-b555-3706a6a4c8f8" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]However, the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/usa/fuitL4CF/"]USA[/a] had used their home advantage to get off to a flyer as well, and were desperate to win consecutive WC fixtures for the first time since 1930, so much so that it only took just over 10 minutes for them to take the lead. [/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/balgun-folarin/rVZLmUsU/"]Folarin Balogun[/a] flew onto [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/robinson-antonee/ppHdaUtm/"]Antonee Robinson[/a]’s pass down the left and past [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/circati-alessandro/x0EJsbc8/"]Alessandro Circati[/a] into the area, sending it across the face of goal where [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/burgess-cameron/xrp5IqqC/"]Cameron Burgess[/a] could only bundle into his own net.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/australia/xSrf6qMM/"]Australia[/a] had no choice but to try to soak up the ensuing pressure, as a buoyant USA looked to build on their lead.
