Nicolas Pepe scored a 98th-minute equaliser as Villarreal rescued a 1-1 LaLiga draw against Deportivo Alavés, a result which leaves the hosts winless in four home matches.

[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/alaves/hxt57t2q/"]El Glorioso[/a] head coach Quique Sánchez Flores was overseeing his first home match in charge against a [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/villarreal/lUatW5jE/"]Villarreal[/a] team seemingly cruising towards consecutive top-four finishes, but one that has flattered to deceive on the road in recent weeks.[/p][p]Those shortcomings were evident here in an underwhelming first-half performance, in which Marcelino’s men would have been expected to seize the initiative against their relegation-threatened opponents. [/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/cardona-sergi/vVh7yy15/"]Sergi Cardona[/a]’s wide near-post header from a corner was their only chance of note in the opening half-hour, before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/martinez-toni/rw0nledT/"]Toni Martinez[/a] dragged a shot wide down the other end for Alaves.[/p][p]Marcelino cut a visibly frustrated figure in the dugout, and his woes were compounded when the hosts took a 40th-minute lead. [/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/luiz-junior/WShuFWRi/"]Luiz Junior[/a] denied both [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ibanez-pablo/xOWXxrsi/"]Pablo Ibanez[/a] and Martinez inside the box, before the latter’s brilliantly improvised backheeled cross was headed into his own net by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/marin-rafa/KIwYY1AC/"]Rafa Marin[/a].[/p][image alt="Alaves celebrate their goal" id="6b7aae38-3d7f-45a2-9f82-9767181b6ba4" credit-line="Ricardo Larreina / Shutterstock Editorial / Profimedia" guid="e1c725fb-cd0f-4810-ae02-47bba58710d1" original-width="1400" original-height="933" /][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/comesana-santi/KK4TPIBj/"]Santi Comesana[/a] had two chances to restore parity before half time, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/sivera-antonio/lMLBCMLN/"]Antonio Sivera[/a] was equal to those attempts on both occasions, before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/pepe-nicolas/j3Hk0qEj/"]Pepe[/a] blazed his follow-up effort over the bar.[/p][p]The match became increasingly scrappy after the restart, which wasn’t helped by the conditions on a wet evening in Vitoria-Gasteiz.[/p][p]Martinez and Ibanez both tested the water with two off-target attempts for the hosts, while [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mikautadze-georges/QgN9t9CH/"]Georges Mikautadze[/a] had a chance to restore parity when his first-time near-post effort was parried to safety by Sivera.[/p][p]It just wasn’t clicking into gear for the visitors, as Pepe’s deflected left-footed strike sailed just wide of the post.[/p][p]El Submarino Amarillo almost gave the hosts a taste of their own medicine when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/freeman-alexander/xxEtrKMD/"]Alex Freeman[/a]’s long throw was nearly diverted into his own net by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/koski-ville/pSPr8Em1/"]Ville Koski[/a], but the post spared the Finn’s blushes.[/p][p]Marin’s own goal looked to have settled the contest, but Pepe took matters into his own hands to equalise deep into stoppage time with a stunning left-footed strike which flew past a motionless Sivera to give Villarreal a share of the spoils.[/p][image alt="Match stats" id="549d646a-62ad-458a-b2ab-959d5d1dfbd8" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="b47110fb-b09f-4f15-a29b-02d7f72042d4" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]It was a hugely frustrating end to the game for Sánchez Flores, whose side are now winless in their last six league games (D3, L3). L3).[/p][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/pepe-nicolas/j3Hk0qEj/"]Nicolas Pepe[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/villarreal/lUatW5jE/"]Villarreal[/a])[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/alaves-hxt57t2q/villarreal-lUatW5jE/?mid=MNzPtaT0"]See all the stats from the match here[/a][/p]
