Dutch KNVB to take legal action against racist slurs after World Cup exit

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said Friday it had filed a complaint to the public prosecutor over racist messages posted in the wake of the country's exit from the World Cup.

[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/netherlands/WYintcWb/"]Oranje[/a]'s defeat to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/morocco/IDKYO3R8/"]Morocco[/a] in a [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/morocco-IDKYO3R8/netherlands-WYintcWb/?mid=S0MygXWj"]penalty shoot-out on Monday[/a] sparked an outpouring of social media abuse directed notably at black Dutch players.[/p][p]The KNVB said it was transferring the messages to the public prosecutor's office for further legal action.[/p][p][b]"Unfortunately, it is never possible to be complete and to detect and arrest every racist reaction, but the KNVB wants to send a very clear signal," [/b]the association said in a statement.[/p][p][b]"There are limits and there are consequences for those who violate those limits."[/b][/p][embed guid="bdc0dc4b-6720-4e41-a342-9807cadb4439" url="https://x.com/OnsOranje/status/2072036215553917250?s=20" social-type="twitter" /][p]The three-time finalists lost on penalties to Morocco in Monday's round-of-32 match in the Mexican city of Monterrey following a 1-1 draw.[/p][p]The three players who missed a penalty, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kluivert-justin/fq4lU5sI/"]Justin Kluivert[/a], [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/timber-quinten/Ag97KtSd/"]Quinten Timber[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/summerville-crysencio/EaRET7t6/"]Crysencio Summerville[/a], suffered "racist and discriminatory" abuse online following the match, according to the KNVB.[/p][p]Prime Minister Rob Jetten told reporters earlier Friday that he expected the prosecutors to proceed with legal action to set an example.[/p][p]What happened after the round-of-32 match was "of course completely unacceptable," said Jetten.[/p][p][b]"One moment they are 'our boys' and we don't see their colour when they are wearing an orange shirt. Then when someone misses a penalty, vitriol pours out from every corner," [/b]added the PM.[/p]
