Iranian women footballers hopeful for safe new life in Australia

Your support has made us feel welcome and less alone as we navigate this transition.[/b][/p][p]"At this stage our primary focus is on our safety, our health and beginning the process of rebuilding our lives," they added.[/p][p]"[b]We are elite athletes and it remains our dream to continue our sporting careers here in Australia. They have not been seen since and are being housed at an undisclosed location.[/p][p]The plight of the rest of the team remains unclear after their return to Iran.[/p][p]AFP reporters saw them cross into their homeland from Turkey on a bus wearing the national team tracksuits and with their hair covered.[/p][p]Soon after, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on X that the players and their support team were "[b]children of the homeland and the people of Iran embrace them[/b]".[/p][p]By returning, they had "[b]disappointed the enemies[/b] [i](of Iran)[/i] [b]and did not surrender to deception and intimidation by anti-Iran elements[/b]", he added.[/p]
