Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded just their second win of the Premier League (PL) season and avoided Derby County’s record low top-flight points tally, as they defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at Molineux to place question marks over the Villans’ top four race.

[p]Despite the driving rain, it was a fast start for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/aston-villa/W00wmLO0/"]Villa[/a], who were looking for just a second win in nine league visits to Molineux.[/p][p]They had numerous half-chances, best of which involved [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/douglas-luiz/IZxlmmuF/"]Douglas Luiz[/a] volleying at [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/jose-sa/tMoomIVO/"]Jose Sa[/a], while [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/toti/YFYH6Vqf/"]Toti Gomes[/a] hit wide at the other end.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rogers-morgan/lp4jm80n/"]Morgan Rogers[/a] also tested the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/wolves/j3Azpf5d/"]Wolves[/a] goalkeeper, but things got considerably scrappier towards the end of the half, when the hosts headed into the dressing rooms having failed to score for the ninth consecutive PL outing.[/p][embed guid="c3189f6e-9f05-4d7c-89e0-4f0e9f87d6a0" url="https://x.com/Wolves/status/2027497224758841370" social-type="twitter" /][p]The hosts were much improved after the break, though, and they took advantage of a complacent Villa to take an unlikely lead on the hour mark.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/armstrong-adam/djcqZvPg/"]Adam Armstrong[/a] tried to control a cross from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tchatchoua-jackson/6w5hZnnM/"]Jackson Tchatchoua[/a], but instead touched it into the path of an arriving [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/joao-gomes/rcOLZhUD/"]Joao Gomes[/a] for the Brazilian to thunder his shot in off the underside of the bar.[/p][p]Villa predictably seized back control after that, and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/maatsen-ian/nPiZrgf3/"]Ian Maatsen[/a] was close to levelling things when he powered straight at Sa from just a few yards out.[/p][embed guid="f21ad41d-96cf-4937-bd1d-0d6a376beb33" url="https://x.com/Flashscorecom/status/2027503847388680473" social-type="twitter" /][p]But the hosts worked incredibly hard to protect their lead and didn’t stop trying to increase it, even after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/abraham-tammy/OYhxyduf/"]Tammy Abraham[/a] had his shot cleared off the line by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mosquera-yerson/AeyqOcqS/"]Yerson Mosquera[/a] in the dying seconds.[/p][p]With virtually the last kick of the game, Wolves broke up the field, leading to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/gomes-rodrigo/6JV5ZgJ6/"]Rodrigo Gomes[/a] finding the net on the turn from the centre of the area.[/p][image alt="Match stats" id="feca4e2b-f4bd-4445-8aca-915ce61ae530" credit-line="Opta by Stats Perform" guid="edef0656-57e4-445b-90e7-6021bae04dac" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]The result cuts Wolves’ gap to safety to 14 points, but any chances of staying up remain particularly remote considering all of their rivals have two games in hand.[/p][p]Villa, meanwhile, could relinquish third position this weekend, and will be under serious pressure when they face pursuing sides [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/manchester-united/ppjDR086/"]Manchester United[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/chelsea/4fGZN2oK/"]Chelsea[/a] in the coming weeks.[/p][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/joao-gomes/rcOLZhUD/"]Joao Gomes[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/wolves/j3Azpf5d/"]Wolverhampton Wanderers[/a])[/p][image alt="Momentum" id="99eac0b2-0263-40e3-9070-36e179113b7c" credit-line="Opta by Stats Perform" guid="e3276ca4-e557-475f-a06d-31935ec9e1f3" original-width="1920" original-height="1080" /][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/aston-villa-W00wmLO0/wolves-j3Azpf5d/summary/stats/?mid=S4iAhinA"]Catch up on the match stats with Flashscore[/a][/p]
