Victor Wembanyama ushers new era in NBA by not taking maximum contract

As expected, Victor Wembanyama has extended his journey with the San Antonio Spurs, but without taking the maximum possible salary. By leaving $50 million on the table, Wemby could pave the way for a shift in mentality in the NBA.

[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/wembanyama-victor/jFmM1MFl/"]Victor Wembanyama[/a]. The Alien. The player who was expected to be the next NBA "game changer." In three years, the French centre has made an incredible impression. You can't really say (at least, not yet) that he has revolutionized the game, but the mark he's left is undeniable.[/p][p]This third season was his true breakthrough. After a second campaign cut short by injury, he led the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/san-antonio-spurs/IwmkErSH/"]San Antonio Spurs[/a] to second place in the tough Western Conference, with a 60+ win season for the first time since the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/duncan-tim/hE0bXnaQ/"]Tim Duncan[/a] era. But above all, he managed to bring the Texas franchise back to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/new-york-knicks/WCNO4nbt/"]New York Knicks[/a].[/p]
Wembanyama delivers on his promise
[p]After three years, players can sign their first contract extension. There was no doubt that Wembanyama would continue with the Spurs. But since arriving in the NBA, he has often said that making money wasn't the main goal of his career: he wanted to win, no matter what it took.[/p][p]It's a speech we've heard many times, but it usually ends with a max contract. Not this time. While he could have re-signed for $303 million over five years, Victor Wembanyama will indeed extend for five seasons, but for "only" $252 million.[/p][embed guid="716d9991-69d5-4fe9-94d4-551e6d6d80e3" url="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/2075712917098611093?s=20" social-type="twitter" /][p]Of course, that's still a huge amount, and let's not kid ourselves about that. But this "discount" is not insignificant. On one hand, he could have made history as the first rookie to sign an extension worth over $300 million. But more importantly, this decision signals a major shift in mentality for an NBA superstar.[/p][p]When it comes to extensions, superstars usually pull a key lever: ego. You have to be a "max player" to be recognized as a great, as someone who carries their team, as the "go-to-guy." But in recent years, contracts have reached absurd heights, leading to difficult situations, as we've seen recently.[/p][p]In recent weeks, it's been the case of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/brown-jaylen/l88NjhUb/"]Jaylen Brown[/a] making headlines. One of the two stars of the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/boston-celtics/KYD9hVEm/"]Boston Celtics[/a], coming off the best season of his career, carrying his team in the absence of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tatum-jayson/t4Y4e7r0/"]Jayson Tatum[/a]. He was among the top 10 players of the season, maybe even top 5.[/p][p]But when it came time to trade him, he had no value. Many tried to explain it by his style of play, but the truth is, a $185 million contract over three years, taking up more than a third of the salary cap, is a risk few teams want to take for that amount. And that leads to a trade everyone calls a "failure."[/p][p]That was true for Jaylen Brown, it was true in 2023 for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lillard-damian/GfOP1DEt/"]Damian Lillard[/a] (Miami didn't want to pay him $60+ million at age 36), and for so many others: superstars sign for the max, or they don't sign and look elsewhere.[/p][p]It's a tradition that has come with the massive salary cap increases over the past decade, resulting in outrageous contracts: everyone talks about "secure the bag" as if $30 million a year isn't enough.[/p][p]Of course, Victor Wembanyama is hardly struggling: $50 million a year is a huge sum. But he could have made $60 million, taken up 30% or more of the salary cap, and hampered his team's future recruitment.[/p][p]Instead, he settles for a lower amount, still getting paid like a superstar (only 16 players will make $50+ million next season), while giving the Spurs more flexibility to strengthen their roster and stay at the top.[/p][embed guid="9eba9345-b563-4fc7-9be4-5858d474ef71" url="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/2075713504276017655?s=20" social-type="twitter" /][p]It's a bet on the future, no doubt, and it will set an example: while the Thunder trio of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/gilgeous-alexander-shai/d6TE5wgc/"]Shai Gilgeous-Alexander[/a] - [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/williams-jalen/4G5tbqUi/"]Jalen Williams[/a] - [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/holmgren-chet/WxvJz45d/"]Chet Holmgren[/a] negotiated hard after the 2025 title and will take up more than 75% of the salary cap for five years (and will earn a combined $185 million in 2030), Victor Wembanyama is leaving room to extend [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/castle-stephon/Kzd3IGeT/"]Stephon Castle[/a], [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/harper-dylan/E95BW6Df/"]Dylan Harper[/a], and all the young talents on his team.[/p][p]Plus, he's setting an example for all his teammates: he's here to win, even if it means giving up money, which should encourage everyone else to do the same.[/p][p]Finally, and most importantly, it's genuinely satisfying to see a sports superstar promise something and actually do it. That's not so common. He wants to win, whatever it takes, and for now, that will cost him $51 million.[/p][p]It's likely that this decision by Victor Wembanyama will open the door to a new era in the NBA, where chasing ever-higher salaries is no longer the norm and players think about the team's interests before stuffing their pockets.[/p][p]This could put an end to pointless debates about player value based on salary, or the problems caused by supermax extensions on rosters, and let everyone focus on what matters: basketball.[/p]
