Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been given a four-year ban after she refused a doping test in December 2025.

[p]An independent tribunal handed [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/vondrousova-marketa/EgKYrSR5/"]Vondrousova[/a] the maximum penalty possible, despite her claims that she had an 'acute stress reaction' which hindered her ability to think straight. A Doping Control Officer tried to test her at around 8pm on December 3rd, but she refused to submit a sample.[/p][p]The Czech was officially charged by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) back in April, and following a hearing, a decision was made.[/p][image alt="Vondrousova won Wimbledon back in 2023" id="c106e0e9-5af0-4634-a6e0-ba1258465629" credit-line="ČTK / Deml Ondřej" guid="da53343b-7b3e-4f78-8eeb-e10ceb692861" original-width="1400" original-height="933" /][p]They announced today that there was 'no compelling justification' for the former world number six to miss the test.[/p][p]“We understand that the testing process is uncomfortable, and acknowledge that it is an additional burden for players whose jobs already come with a high level of pressure and scrutiny, but it is essential to protect fair competition," they said[/p][p]“Safety and welfare of players and our testers is really important to us. Our testers are well-trained, professional, and the gender of our testing witness always matches the player. They carry ID at all times, and players are able to verify their identity in other ways if they are ever unsure.”[/p][p]The player now has the right to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).[/p][embed guid="a06ba26e-326a-4a96-9cc1-105362893159" url="https://x.com/itia_tennis/status/2069051297098076333" social-type="twitter" /][p]In April, Vondrousova took to Instagram to give her side of the story: “The recent doping control incident happened because I reached a breaking point after months of physical and mental stress.[/p][p]“When someone rang my door late at night without properly identifying themselves or following protocol, I reacted as a person who felt scared. In that moment, it was about feeling safe, not about avoiding anything.[/p][p]“Experts confirmed I suffered an Acute Stress Reaction (F43.O) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (F41.1). In that moment, fear clouded my judgment, and I just couldn’t process the situation rationally. After what happened to Petra (Kvitová, the fellow Czech Wimbledon champion who was stabbed in her own home 10 years ago), we don’t take strangers at our door lightly.”[/p][p]Vondrousova’s suspension see her out of action until June 21st, 2030, and she can not take part in or appear at any events organised or sanctioned by the ITF, WTA, ATP, the Grand Slams, or any national association[/p]
