The smooth road Argentina have been handed to the World Cup semi-finals

After failing to secure first place in their group, Portugal were sent to the opposite half of the draw as Argentina and Lionel Messi. As a result, a highway has opened up for the world champions toward a fourth title.

[p]Nine points, eight goals scored. That’s the record for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/argentina/f9OppQjp/"]Argentina[/a], who, in a group that on paper wasn’t particularly demanding, have reaffirmed their status as one of the favourites for the 2026 World Cup. With [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/messi-lionel/vgOOdZbd/"]Lionel Messi[/a] playing 'at home' and representing MLS, their position as top contenders has only been strengthened after the knockout stage draw was revealed.[/p][p]The round of 16 match against Cape Verde looks, at least on paper, more than manageable, as it’s a team without standout individuals capable of making a difference and who reached this stage after drawing all three of their matches.[/p][p]Beyond the huge gap in the FIFA rankings - with the South Americans in first place and the Africans at 67th - the difference in quality on the pitch is clear between the reigning champions and a team that made it to the United States thanks to the expanded AFCON slots.[/p][embed guid="8ac45f3d-2009-47b8-a1ec-6056b25a420f" url="https://x.com/FIFAWorldCup/status/2071082870207127706" social-type="twitter" /]
Space and time
[p]What lies ahead, at least before the clash with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/cape-verde/MocyWdm7/"]Cape Verde[/a], is a freshly paved highway for the world champions. With qualification to the next round almost a given after their convincing performances in the first three matches, the team led by Lionel Scaloni should face [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/australia/xSrf6qMM/"]Australia[/a] or [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/egypt/bejDn7NN/"]Egypt[/a] in the round of 16.[/p][p]In the quarter-finals, the toughest opponent would be [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/colombia/G02s4PCS/"]Colombia[/a] or perhaps [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/switzerland/rHJ2vy1B/"]Switzerland[/a], who have a more solid structure. The fact that [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/portugal/WvJrjFVN/"]Portugal[/a] didn’t win their group has deprived the World Cup of a much-anticipated quarter-final showdown between [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ronaldo-cristiano/WGOY4FSt/"]Cristiano Ronaldo[/a] and Messi himself.[/p][image alt="Lautaro celebrates his goal against Jordan" id="a3945f7a-ca67-47f6-b1b9-1e840608dfe3" credit-line="REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach" guid="0c9d357e-bde1-45a7-bb33-d24e6a0b2d6f" original-width="4033" original-height="2873" /][p]But it’s not just fate smiling on the South Americans. The Argentinians will have two more days of rest compared to, for example, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/england/j9N9ZNFA/"]England[/a], who, after beating [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/panama/OWKqbCfi/"]Panama[/a] on Saturday night, will face the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/d-r-congo/phn9mm8H/"]Democratic Republic of Congo[/a] on Wednesday at 18:00 CET. While Argentina defeated [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/jordan/vNcmJoU2/"]Jordan[/a] 3-1, they will play their round of 16 match against Cape Verde two days and five hours later.[/p]
Not much of a test?
[p]So, from the outset, it’s hard not to think that the world champions could take advantage of the favourable conditions to reach the semifinals in top form, where, besides the English, the most dangerous potential opponents would be [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/brazil/I9l9aqLq/"]Brazil[/a]. However, Carlo Ancelotti’s team has yet to showcase that they are true contenders.[/p][embed guid="1831009f-6b50-48b1-9a4b-fda4f74f2e46" url="https://x.com/sudanalytics_/status/2070690998137606569" social-type="twitter" /][p]All the conditions are in place for another triumphant run to the final and a second consecutive trophy. Destiny seems to be on their side. The only thing that could tip the balance is the lack of truly tough tests. While the relative weakness of some opponents allows for better resource management - especially for a Messi who just turned 39 but remains as decisive in the box as he was at 25 - it could also be a double-edged sword.[/p][p]Avoiding France and Spain, the strongest long-term rivals, before a potential final is undoubtedly an advantage in the race for the title. The road to the final in New Jersey, for now, looks smooth and clear. The only obstacle, paradoxically, could be overconfidence after facing lesser and less demanding teams. At the end of a journey with hardly any bumps, it will be the mind that counts more than the lungs and legs.[/p][infobox id="4ccc1b10-d68f-4c97-bcf4-5e613c17c2e3" /]
