A calamitous first quarter of the match from Tottenham Hotspur saw Atlético Madrid take control of this UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, winning 5-2 to go 20 home knockout matches unbeaten in the competition under Diego Simeone.

[p]Any hopes that [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/tottenham/UDg08Ohm/"]Tottenham[/a] wouldn’t bring their poor Premier League form into this game were quashed just six minutes in, when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kinsky-antonin/hv1U4aGj/"]Antonin Kinsky[/a] slipped when attempting to pass out, presenting the ball straight to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lookman-ademola/8QK1SO5g/"]Ademola Lookman[/a].[/p][p]The Nigerian squared it to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/alvarez-julian/bBHauDIC/"]Julian Alvarez[/a], who selflessly helped it on to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/llorente-marcos/z3D5zvbD/"]Marcos Llorente[/a], and he guided it past the goalkeeper.[/p][p]To rub salt into the wounds, only eight minutes later it was [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/van-de-ven-micky/rotN6HH8/"]Micky van de Ven[/a]’s turn to slip, allowing [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/griezmann-antoine/OxCa1jdT/"]Antoine Griezmann[/a] a free run at goal, and he duly rolled in the second.[/p][p]Within seconds of the restart, Spurs’ nightmare continued when Kinsky completely miskicked a clearance, playing the ball straight to Alvarez, who tapped it into the empty net. [/p][p]That was the end of the miserable night for the Czech goalkeeper, who was replaced by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/vicario-guglielmo/0fdL3XXa/"]Guglielmo Vicario[/a] just after the quarter-hour mark.[/p][embed guid="7118e2ca-0e64-4101-b7a1-123ba9805c56" url="https://x.com/Flashscorecom/status/2031466474481570047" social-type="twitter" /][p]Yet, he was also picking the ball out of his net within five minutes of being on the pitch. A Griezmann free-kick was diverted towards his own goal by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/sarr-pape/CSjTl5sR/"]Pape Matar Sarr[/a], and while Vicario scrambled it off the line, he could do nothing to stop [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/le-normand-robin/8GVQFgH4/"]Robin Le Normand[/a] bundling in the rebound.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tudor-igor/Qu12kvXf/"]Igor Tudor[/a] called for calm, and whether or not his words had any impact, the visitors pulled one back soon after when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/richarlison/K82Dz773/"]Richarlison[/a] squared to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/porro-pedro/nTebDzHC/"]Pedro Porro[/a], who held off his marker and finished smartly.[/p][p]Lookman forced Vicario into a smart stop to prevent further embarrassment, before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/romero-cristian/jBZTWXMn/"]Cristian Romero[/a] struck the post from a corner.[/p][embed guid="4a191be8-cb81-4494-bb3a-67b5351de9c0" url="https://x.com/atletienglish/status/2031475520861266427" social-type="twitter" /][p]Ten minutes into the second half, the match turned from building a potential Spurs comeback to an Atleti rout in a matter of seconds, as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/oblak-jan/SYy8ZHN9/"]Jan Oblak[/a] made a terrific save to deny Richarlison, and the frantic clearance was knocked down by Griezmann into the path of Alvarez, who sprinted 60 yards to bury his second past Vicario.[/p][p]That put the result beyond doubt, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/solanke-dominic/OrADwZse/"]Dominic Solanke[/a] continued to press and got his reward 15 minutes from time when Oblak’s loose pass was picked up by Porro, whose ball to the English striker powered home for 5-2.[/p][p]Van de Ven ballooned a chance over the bar with just over 10 minutes to go that would have really reignited the tie, but it's now six losses in a row in all competitions for Tottenham, who began the night looking for a fourth win and clean sheet in the UCL.[/p][p]For Los Colchoneros, it’s now 16 wins in their last 18 at home, as they head to London next Wednesday with a three-goal advantage.[/p][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/alvarez-julian/bBHauDIC/"]Julian Alvarez[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/atl-madrid/jaarqpLQ/"]Atletico Madrid[/a])[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/atl-madrid-jaarqpLQ/tottenham-UDg08Ohm/summary/stats/?mid=IPLvX3GD"]Catch up on the match stats with Flashscore[/a][/p][image alt="Momentum" id="9d2dd89d-9997-4bc4-a9a4-5beae2f47052" credit-line="Opta by Stats Perform" guid="3061d0e9-37c6-49eb-9d83-6a6887b3fdb0" original-width="1920" original-height="1080" /]
