Hull City marked their first Premier League (PL) match since 2017 with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United that left them stunned, especially as the Tigers had last beaten the Red Devils in league action in 1974.

[p]Given the teams’ differing aspirations this term, many will have expected the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/manchester-united/ppjDR086/"]Red Devils[/a] to walk over their hosts. That wasn’t the case at all, though, with Hull giving as good as they got early on.[/p][p]Shortly after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tzolakis-konstantinos/G0ZL7CGI/"]Konstantinos Tzolakis[/a] had denied [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mbeumo-bryan/8KDrOl80/"]Bryan Mbeumo[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/matheus-cunha/bq5QzRdb/"]Matheus Cunha[/a], [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mcburnie-oliver/rNFSg6i4/"]Oli McBurnie[/a]’s towering header forced a save from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lammens-senne/UFssg7X4/"]Senne Lammens[/a]. [/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/giles-ryan/EkradkCg/"]Ryan Giles[/a] then saw his effort tipped over the crossbar and McBurnie was denied again from the ensuing corner, as Lammens tipped the ball onto the post, only for a perfectly placed Semi Ajayi to score the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/hull-city/S66R0t75/"]Tigers[/a]’ dream opener and inspire rapturous celebrations.[/p][embed guid="32844e23-802f-47e2-8a72-dbdb2bed1f7b" url="https://x.com/Flashscorecom/status/2091131401294712895" social-type="twitter" /][p]With the visitors searching for an equaliser, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/dorgu-patrick/Sf4eaXAH/"]Patrick Dorgu[/a] had two promising openings, being found by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/fernandes-bruno/GYvAMDm2/"]Bruno Fernandes[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/maguire-harry/xG8v3YRA/"]Harry Maguire[/a] but missing the target on both occasions.[/p][p]Mbeumo then saw his acrobatic attempt deflected behind by debutant [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mendy-nobel/by4YfNNK/"]Nobel Mendy[/a], who made his mark at the other end shortly after, clinically guiding [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/slater-regan/faOPBmR4/"]Regan Slater[/a]’s pinpoint free-kick delivery past Lammens.[/p][image alt="Hull City's Nobel Mendy celebrates scoring their second goal" id="b55fbb21-91fb-44dc-aec6-afeccb1de382" credit-line="Reuters/Lee Smith" guid="717aa612-71c4-483e-a18d-2ea8f875ff1a" original-width="2817" original-height="1854" /][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/egan-john/rL1xRV7U/"]John Egan[/a] then blocked a Fernandes attempt to ensure Hull entered the break with their deserved two-goal lead intact.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/carrick-michael/phM8NElP/"]Michael Carrick[/a] responded by bringing [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rashford-marcus/COnT2Lh0/"]Marcus Rashford[/a] on for Dorgu, yet his side still struggled against a resolute Tigers defence, with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/heaven-ayden/rs7PiPFt/"]Ayden Heaven[/a]’s header sailing harmlessly off-target.[/p][p]Hull were also filled with confidence going forward, as encapsulated by McBurnie embarking on a mazy run and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/belloumi-mohamed/WWdihvvt/"]Mohamed Belloumi[/a] hitting a strike from range that eventually cleared the crossbar.[/p][image alt="Match stats" id="20952953-b639-4a8f-9b82-e21b4ee5b8e5" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="72096688-ac5d-4517-bd03-844edb71527d" original-width="2160" original-height="2700" /][p]They were still dealt blows with Mendy and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/coyle-lewie/thluq2xq/"]Lewie Coyle[/a] going off injured within seven minutes of each other, yet they refused to falter, and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/drameh-cody/jyLCYY07/"]Cody Drameh[/a] came agonisingly close after replacing the latter.[/p][p]Tzolakis had little to do for much of the first half but did well to tip Mbeumo’s shot wide when called upon.[/p][image alt="Momentum" id="1027e8db-fe23-4c7b-a97f-181efedd5c28" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="8431cf86-a2f9-4ce3-844b-7894a20b72c8" original-width="3840" original-height="2160" /][p]And with time running out, Maguire fired a speculative shot straight at him as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/jakirovic-sergej/UVrk8S2I/"]Sergej Jakirović[/a]’s side sent a message to the PL on the day he became the first Bosnian to manage in the league.[/p][p]Meanwhile, the result and accompanying performance will only present questions for Carrick, as United lost their PL opener in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1973.[/p][image alt="POTM" id="713983a0-06dd-405e-8f53-31e168daa953" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="5a03c67a-6014-4e33-b38a-27f1ae6052a3" original-width="2160" original-height="2700" /][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tzolakis-konstantinos/G0ZL7CGI/"]Konstantinos Tzolakis[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/hull-city/S66R0t75/"]Hull City[/a])[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/hull-S66R0t75/manchester-utd-ppjDR086/summary/stats/?mid=zc0VjBZF"]Catch up on the match stats with Flashscore[/a][/p]
