Verstappen pips Hamilton to Singapore sprint win after Russell crashes

Max Verstappen won a wet and dramatic Singapore sprint race for Red Bull on Saturday after George Russell's Mercedes crashed when leading at the end of the opening lap.

[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/verstappen-max/UV3mgeXB/"]Verstappen[/a] held off Ferrari's [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/hamilton-lewis/tI5Vpe1h/"]Lewis Hamilton[/a] to win by 2.50 seconds, with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/leclerc-charles/KlCOSRub/"]Charles Leclerc[/a] third, as the McLarens of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/norris-lando/WSVABbVF/"]Lando Norris[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/piastri-oscar/MqKAIeUf/"]Oscar Piastri[/a] touched and spun on the final lap when fourth and fifth.[/p][p]A heavy shower 10 minutes before the scheduled start meant a delay of 30 minutes.[/p][p]All cars began on intermediate tyres with some sectors of the Marina Bay Street Circuit much dryer than others as the field embarked on two formation laps behind the safety car.[/p][p][b]The eventual standing start saw [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/russell-george/xxF56RaN/"]Russell[/a] start on the front row alongside pole-sitter Verstappen, and it was the Englishman who got away better.[/b][/p][embed guid="fe891bef-b269-4865-a66c-ef177539dba8" url="https://x.com/F1/status/2108867907174162819" social-type="twitter" /][p]His lead was short-lived as he lost control after touching a treacherous white line on the final bend of the opening lap.[/p][p]He slid sideways into the pit lane wall, bringing out a safety car.[/p][p]It was another setback in a season of bad luck for Russell, who will start from the back of the grid in Sunday's Grand Prix because of engine penalties.[/p][p][b]"It was a miscalculation,"[/b] Russell admitted to Sky Sports.[/p][p][b]"Came through the corner, had more battery deployment than I thought, pushed me a little bit wider than I hoped and went on to the white line. Silly mistake.
