England made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup (WC) campaign after a 4-2 victory over Croatia, who have now lost four of their last five opening games at the finals.

[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/chalobah-trevoh/2N61AJte/"]Thomas Tuchel[/a] was the latest man in the Three Lions hotseat at a major tournament,  embarking on what he hopes will be the first match en route to securing a first senior men’s trophy in 60 years.[/p][p]After leading [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/croatia/K8aznggo/"]Croatia[/a] to the last four in each of the previous two WCs, Zlatko Dalić’s men were ready to embrace their dark horses tag and were eager to exploit [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/england/j9N9ZNFA/"]England[/a]’s nervousness in the opening exchanges. [/p][embed guid="5a416f20-b24f-4a13-ab58-30baec922351" url="https://x.com/England/status/2067340380652163187" social-type="twitter" /][p]However, referee Clément Turpin pointed to the spot down the other end after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/modric-luka/bZWyoJnA/"]Luka Modrić[/a] brought down [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/madueke-chukwunonso/Ac57P9Pt/"]Noni Madueke[/a] in the box.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/livakovic-dominik/OOasPX9j/"]Dominik Livaković[/a] saved [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kane-harry/v5HSlEAa/"]Harry Kane[/a]’s initial attempt from 12 yards, but the Three Lions skipper earned a reprieve after the Croatian shot-stopper moved too early off his line and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/gvardiol-josko/86K1f1fd/"]Joško Gvardiol[/a] was penalised for encroachment. [/p][p]Kane made no mistake at the second time of asking to mark his record-breaking 30th England appearance at a major tournament in typical goalscoring fashion. [/p][embed guid="71500092-1c47-4a85-b91d-45fcd2f02647" url="https://x.com/England/status/2067347919498330206" social-type="twitter" /][p]Croatia responded emphatically when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/baturina-martin/0WWy1lhR/"]Martin Baturina[/a] unleashed a superb right-footed strike past [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/pickford-jordan/SKTJdUtH/"]Jordan Pickford[/a], before Kane scored again to equal [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lineker-gary/tb3p0saj/"]Gary Lineker[/a]’s record of 10 England WC goals with a superb header from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rice-declan/zkQ8Cm6n/"]Declan Rice[/a]’s corner.[/p][p]But Tuchel’s team continued to look vulnerable at the back, and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/musa-petar/2JMpq78N/"]Petar Musa[/a] coolly slotted home past Pickford from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/perisic-ivan/4AbKyVr9/"]Ivan Perišić[/a]’s headed knockdown with almost the last kick of the half.[/p][p]The second Croatia equaliser clearly irked the Three Lions, and they responded within two minutes of the restart through [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/bellingham-jude/QNvlPm7s/"]Jude Bellingham[/a].[/p][embed guid="8ce3f156-83e5-4ab4-aaaf-951098a7bfac" url="https://x.com/England/status/2067356233120510002" social-type="twitter" /][p]He marked becoming the youngest European player to appear in four different major tournaments with a fine finish from a tight angle after latching onto [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/anderson-elliott/KdYCbsbE/"]Elliot Anderson[/a]’s perfectly-weighted ball down the right-hand side. [/p][p]A combination of some wasteful finishing and superb goalkeeping from Livaković kept the Croatian deficit at one, as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/o-reilly-nico/xOrYaNWc/"]Nico O’Reilly[/a] headed wide at the far post from Rice’s corner.[/p][p]Livaković then made several more stops to deny Rice, O’Reilly, and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/gordon-anthony/EFo95m2P/"]Anthony Gordon[/a], with England hammering on the door in search of a potentially decisive fourth goal.[/p][p]They initially failed to translate that momentum into another goal though, and Pickford was called into action to parry away [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/pasalic-marco/6wSPewNt/"]Marco Pašalić[/a]’s close-range strike after he had exploited those familiar English defensive frailties.[/p][image alt="Match stats" effectively diminished when two substitutes combined to seal all three points. [/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/saka-bukayo/08NLEo06/"]Bukayo Saka[/a] made a darting run in from the right and laid the ball on a plate for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rashford-marcus/COnT2Lh0/"]Marcus Rashford[/a] to cut inside and calmly place his shot past Livaković.[/p][image
