Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said the Blues have the "foundations" for success after Sky pundit Jamie Carragher labelled them a "broken club" following a disastrous Premier League run.

[p]The former [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/liverpool/lId4TMwf/"]Liverpool[/a] defender spoke out after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/chelsea/4fGZN2oK/"]Chelsea[/a] suffered a sixth straight league defeat on Monday, against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/nottingham/UsushcZr/"]Nottingham Forest[/a].[/p][p]Chelsea have slumped to ninth in the Premier League table and their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League appear to be over.[/p][p]But McFarlane, who took charge after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rosenior-liam/4fMAHvLm/"]Liam Rosenior[/a] was sacked last month, was bullish about Chelsea's future ahead of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/chelsea-4fGZN2oK/liverpool-lId4TMwf/?mid=8j1NPVnm"]Saturday's match[/a] at Liverpool.[/p][p]"It's Jamie's job, he's a pundit, he's got to give his opinion and I respect that, that's his job and it's what he's there to do. I can only speak on my experience at this club," McFarlane said on Thursday.[/p][p]"And I think that there's a lot of foundations for this team to have success. We're not in the best form at the moment, we're not performing the way we should be but I do think there are foundations there for this team to be successful."[/p][embed guid="b4e174d2-809a-4ece-99b8-35afb2890029" url="https://x.com/ChelseaFC/status/2052407268168097881" social-type="twitter" /][p]The English coach, whose team beat [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/leeds/tUxUbLR2/"]Leeds[/a] last month to qualify for the FA Cup final against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/manchester-city/Wtn9Stg0/"]Manchester City[/a], denied his players had downed tools as the season enters its final weeks.[/p][p]"The performances haven't been good enough, we're in a really bad run at the moment," he said. "The Leeds performance was a glimmer when we thought we could build on that and we weren't able to do that.[/p][p]"But I do see these boys every day, every training session, every meeting, in the gym. They are in a good place to go and attack games. We just haven't been able to translate that."[/p][p]McFarlane said teenager [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/derry-jesse/4deYk3pg/"]Jesse Derry[/a] would miss the rest of the season after he was stretchered off in the 3-1 defeat against Forest following a sickening clash of heads, but he said the signs were "positive".[/p]
